April is a 22-year-old working hard making sandwiches at the deli on the corner, not sure exactly where she’s going in life, and sad that the boy she has been seeing seems willing to leave town that afternoon and let their tenuous relationship slip away. On that very afternoon, some pretentious 35-year-old guy orders a fucking pastrami sandwich only he doesn't want any mayonnaise on it. Is that supposed to be some sort of dietary restriction? April is not having her best day and her thoughts are far from work, so there is mayonnaise on the sandwich after all.
Just then, the boy pulls into the parking lot in his convertible, parks, and takes up a bouquet of flowers to head into the deli. He wants her for real. April erupts with a shriek of pure joy and excitement, removes the deli apron and gloves, leaving that bum summer job, and rushes to embrace the boy while the pretentious 35-year-old starts to complain to management that his sandwich came out with mayonnaise. Her happiness is so much bigger than the stares of the onlookers and the petty detail of the mayonnaise; his entitlement is no match for her ebullience. The 35-year-old is forced to reckon with something much more important than his sandwich.
